On April 30, 2018, the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s No Food Left Behind project conducted a six-week Challenge to Waste Less Food. Confirmed Corvallis-area participants weighed and recorded edible or previously-edible food that went to waste in their household each week. To be successful, participants received a free digital scale, counter-top compost pail, and a “tool box” full of printed information and Challenge forms (also online).
For the first two weeks, participating households simply monitored the amount of avoidable or preventable food they generated, logged in below and recorded that data. For the following four weeks, they used many tips and tools we provided to plan and shop smarter, prep smarter, store smarter, eat smarter and of course, waste less food!
The baseline and subsequent data will be used to help our program determine which methods to reduce waste were the most helpful, and to get a sense of how much wasted food Corvallis households can prevent.
